The telecommunications industry says that 5G millimeter waves won’t have any heath effects because they can only penetrate a single millimeter deep into the skin. So why should we worry?
Actually, there are lots of reasons to worry, beginning with immediate effects on people who have already got 5G in their neighborhoods. The Swiss publication L’Illustre* reports that people who have never felt any health effects from previous generations of wireless technology are now suffering from various health problems since 5G small cells were installed near their homes. They have developed headaches, insomnia and tinnitus, and one man also has permanently blocked sinuses. Another man has more acute symptoms: his tinnitus is disabling and he experienced such severe pains in his chest that he thought he was having a heart attack.
Such immediate effects of 5G are uncomfortable, and they haven’t gone away. But is that all we can expect from 5G? Not at all, say experts Dr. Martin Pall** and Cindy L. Russell***.
There are two reasons for this. First, the effects of 5G are more than skin deep. Second, 5G harms the eyes.
The skin is the largest organ in the body, and Ms. Russell points out that “many biological responses to MMW (millimeter wave) irradiation can be initiated within the skin” that “can result in physiological effects in the nervous system, heart and immune system mediated through neuroendocrine mechanisms.”
Dr Pall expects that there will be a very high level of surface effects from 5G, including melanomas on parts of the body that are not exposed to sunlight as well as autoimmune diseases—the latter because T-cells which are vital to the functioning of the immune system circulate near the surface of the body. Without T-cells, we don’t have an immune system.
But 5G waves won’t stop in the first millimeter of skin, says Dr. Pall. He points to two recently declassified CIA documents as proof that MMWs penetrate at least 20 millimeters deep into the body, which is twenty times more than industry claims. One paper shows that millimeter waves damaged the heart, kidney, spleen, liver and bone marrow of rodents as well as having severe effects on their skins. The second paper shows that MMWs can penetrate the hair, skin, skull and meninges (the protective covering surrounding the brain) to reach the brain itself.
How does this happen? Dr. Pall says that the electrical parts of electromagnetic fields are easily absorbed by the body, but the magnetic components are “very highly penetrating”. He believes MMWs may penetrate as deep as 40 millimeters into the body.
Second, there are the effects of MMWs on eyes. Wireless technologies are already affecting people’s eyes, Ms. Russell says, and the number of people with under age 40 with cataracts is increasing all the time. Cataracts are the leading cause of blindness in the world today. 5G is widely expected to cause cataracts because the MMWs will affect the surface of the eyes.
Ms. Russell cites a number of experiments with microwaves at non-thermal levels of exposure which demonstrate that microwave radiation from cell phones and other devices, as well as Wi-Fi, can cause opacity of the lens, corneal lesions, increased vascular permeability, and degeneration of photoreceptors in the retina. Many of these effects are irreversible. 5G millimeter waves are expected to target the eyes particularly.
With 5G, we will be living in a veritable soup of microwave and millimeter-wave frequencies. 3G, 4G, LTE, Wi-Fi and 5G will be broadcast from satellites in space, while 5G small cells will be installed every 250 meters throughout towns and cities. Are we really all prepared to risk our sight, our hearts, our skins, our internal organs, our nervous systems and our immune systems just for faster downloads and the IOT?
